Global Maternal Health
As a clinically trained midwife Indie brings a unique perspective to academic, theoretical, and policy-driven approaches to global maternal health, and the challenges of providing high standards of care in a variety of international settings.
Programme Design and Implementation
During her tenure as Director at Atsede Clinic, Ethiopia, Indie has been responsible for the design and implementation of numerous maternal and child health outreach, public health, education, peer-support, and inpatient programmes. This has included securing funding, stakeholder consultations, and MEAL.
Clinical Teaching
Indie is an experienced clinical mentor, with a particular interest in reinvigorating disempowered, disenchanted midwives, and reigniting a passion for the role midwifery has to play in the wider women's health and social empowerment context. She have taught on the importance of compassion in midwifery in reducing harm, particularly with regards to traumatic births, and the impact these have long-term on women, babies, and their families.
My Approach
Indie believes passionately in pivotal role midwives have, not only in their clinical capacity guiding women safely through pregnancy with compassionate, confident, and knowledgeable care, but also as agents for wider social change. Midwives sit at the heart of health, with a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of the myriad public health interventions, from WASH, to nutrition, to immunisations and inoculations, to SHRH, to safe and enriching environments for families, and as such are uniquely positioned to contribute towards the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, of health and social inequalities, and of the empowerment of women as a force for improving standards of living.
Midwives should be taking their place in leadership roles, both within their own communities and on a regional, national, and international level. As a dual qualified midwife-anthropologist with experience with a wide range of stakeholders, Indie has dedicated her career so far to making this a reality. She is keen to continue to assist governmental and non-governmental organisations whose aims align with this belief.
